Use a gauge of 15 sts and 18 rows (4 inch) in Stockinette Stitch to knit a hat that measures approximately 19 (20-1/2) inch in circumference. Directions are for S/M with directions for L/XL given in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to both sizes. Save time, check your gauge. If the needles listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere. Special Stitches and Abbreviations: K2tog/P2tog = Knit or Purl 2 stitches together. Insert the right needle into two stitches at the same time and Knit or Purl. This will result in a decrease of one stitch. M1 = Make 1 (Increase). Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and knit strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole. Stockinette Stitch = Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all sts. Row 2: Purl all sts. Repeat rows 1-2. Garter Stitch = Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all sts. Row 2: Knit all sts. Repeat rows 1-2. Note: Hat is made beginning with earflaps. Then Earflaps and Hat are worked as one in rows, then worked to crown/top. Hat has a center back seam. When joining seam, carefully align stripe pattern.
