1Use a gauge of 24 sts and 14 rows (4 inch) in 2x2 Rib stitch to knit a hat that measures approximately 18 (20) inch in circumference. Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. Save time, check your gauge. If the needles listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere. Special Abbreviations and Stitches: K2tog/P2tog = Knit or Purl 2 sts together (decrease) 2x2 Rib = Row 1 (Right Side): K2, P2. Row 2 (Wrong Side): Knit the knit sts, and purl the purl sts. Repeat rows 1-2.
2With Grey, cast on 72 (80) sts. Row 1 (Right Side): Work in 2x2 Rib stitch. Row 2 (Wrong Side): Work in 2x2 Rib stitch. Row 3 (Right Side): Change to Neon Green and work in 2x2 Rib stitch. Row 4 (Wrong Side): Work in 2x2 Rib stitch. Continue working in 2x2 Rib and alternating stripe pattern, Rows 1-4, until Hat measures 7-1/2 (8) inch from cast-on edge.
3Shape Crown: Row 1 (Right Side) decease row: *K2, p2, k2tog, p2*. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2 ? 65 (72) sts. Row 2 (Wrong Side): *P2, k2, p1, k2*. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2. Row 3 (Right Side) decrease row: *K2tog, p2, k1, p2*. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2tog 55 (61) sts. Row 4 (Wrong Side): *P1, k2*. Repeat from * to last st, p1. Row 5 (Right Side) decrease row: *K1, p2tog*. Repeat from * to last st, k1 37 (41) sts. Row 6 (Wrong Side) decrease: K2tog across row to last st, k1 19 (21) sts. Cut yarn leaving a tail 18 inch. With yarn needle, draw tail through remaining sts twice and pull tightly.
4Finishing: Using yarn needle and mattress st, match seams lining up stripes carefully, sew seam together. Weave in ends.
