Use a gauge of 15 sts and 18 rows (4 inch) in Stockinette Stitch to knit a hat that measures approximately 19 inch in circumference. Hat is designed to fit a 1 to 5 year old. If the needles listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere. Special Stitches and Abbreviations: K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together. Insert the right needle into two stitches at the same time and Knit. This will result in a decrease of one stitch. This decrease will slant to the right. Stockinette Stitch = Row 1 (Right Side): Knit all sts. Row 2: Purl all sts. Repeat rows 1-2. K1, P1 Rib = Row 1: K1, P1. Row 2: Knit the knit sts, purl the purl sts. Repeat rows 1-2. Notes: I-Cord = Knit across row do not turn. Slide stitches to opposite end of needle, keeping yarn to back. Bring the yarn across the back and knit another row pulling the first stitch tightly to eliminate any gap across the stitches. Repeat until desired length. Hat is made beginning with I-cord ties, then make earflaps. Earflaps and crown are joined and worked in the round using circular then double-pointed needles and worked to top. I-Cord Ties and Earflaps = Using Black and double-pointed needles, cast on 4 sts. Work I-Cord Tie until it measures 8 inch from beginning. Row 1 (Right Side): Change to circular needles, working back and forth in rows, K2, place marker, k2. Row 2: (Wrong Side): P4 across row. Row 3: Knit to 1 st before marker, knit into the front and back of stitch, slip marker, knit into the front and back of next stitch. Knit to end of row. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until there are 14 sts. Continue working in Stockinette st until Earflap measures 12 inch from beginning, end on a Wrong Side row. Cut yarn and place first Earflap (14 sts) on a stitch holder and set aside. Make second I-Cord Tie and Earflap, do not cut yarn.
