Use a gauge of 5 sts x 8 rows = 4 in St st to create a cowl with 46 circumference. Save time, check your gauge. When casting on, be sure to use either the long tail, knitted, or cable methods. The backward loop cast-on will not work for this project. The fringe is made by dropping a single stitch at the edge of the Cowl, and letting it unravel to the cast-on edge.
Cast on 6 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): Knit. Row 2 (WS): Purl.
Continue in St st until Cowl measures 46 from cast-on edge, ending with WS row. Bind off each st to last st, drop last st off needle and let unravel all the way to cast-on edge, cut yarn and pull through last remaining stitch on needle to fasten off.
With sewing needle and thread, sew cast-on edge to bind-off edge. To create fringe, cut through the center of each loop created by the dropped stitch. Tie each pair of fringe together. Weave in ends of yarn by tacking down with sewing needle and thread. Wrap Cowl once or twice around neck to wear.
