Project Instructions

  • 1
Project time does not include drying time for neither the paint nor the glue.
  • 2
Paint the surface of wood plaque to look like grass with leaves on it by dabbing bits of Hauser Light Green, Foliage Green and Kelly Green. Once these paints are dry, add Canyon Orange, Tuscan Red and Cadmium Yellow sporadically, making sure to let the various shades of Green show through. You can also dab a Milk Chocolate “walking path” from one end to the center of the plaque. Paint the border of the wood plaque Lamp (Ebony) Black to frame the “yard”.
  • 3
Paint the walls and roof of the birdhouse Grey Sky. Once the paint is dry, paint the entire birdhouse with One Step Crackle. After the Crackle paint has finished drying, paint the main walls and roof of the birdhouse Lamp (Ebony) Black, the “porch” Milk Chocolate and keep the inside of the birdhouse opening Grey Sky. (Tip: by painting the inside of the birdhouse Grey Sky, you are giving it enough contrast to frame the window if you choose to put anything inside like a skeleton.) When the Lamp (Ebony) Black paint is dry, it will crack, showing Grey Sky underneath. The Milk Chocolate porch will also crack, showing the color of the wood, making it look like it has a grain.
  • 4
Use the craft knife to scratch “boards” onto the "porch" of the birdhouse. (Option: take a sheet of sandpaper and dab Canyon Orange and Tuscan Red paint on it similar to how you painted the “leaves” on the “grass” of the plaque. When you are finished, cut the sandpaper into 1 inch x 1 inch squares and gluing these pieces to the roof beginning at the bottom and working your way to the top, changing the direction of your overlap with each new row.)
  • 5
Apply a liberal amount of glue to the bottom of the birdhouse and place it on your plaque.
  • 6
Paint about 20 wooden matchsticks Grey Sky and cut some of them to be shorter than the others; the creepiest fences are never perfect! When wodden matchsticks are dry, cut about 6 feet of wire and bend it in half. Place a wooden matchstick in the bend and twist around it. Do this every 1-1/2 to 2 inch until you have reached the end of the wire. Wrap the fence around the wood plaque to make sure the size is correct. (If your fence ends up being too long, you can always cut it and if your fence isn’t long enough, you can add onto it the same way you started the fence.)
  • 7
Begin attaching the fence to the wood plaque by applying a small dab of hot glue to the wood plaque and placing a fence post in it. Hold each post in place at different angles until it is dry. Once your fence is up, dry brush Milk Chocolate paint on your fence posts and wire. This will make it look old and rusty! If you’d like, you can also dab a combination of the Green paints at the bottom of your fence posts covering the hot glue, making it look like grass.
  • 8
Take the twigs you found in your yard and begin figuring out your placement. Once you like how they look, glue them into place by applying a dab of hot glue to the plaque and holding the twig in it until it dries.
  • 9
Use a combination of buttons from the Glitter Pumpkins, Jacks in Hats, Spooktacular, Things That Make You Go Boo, Fright Night, Candy Corn, Happy Haunting and Fall Medley packages to embellish project (use the wire cutters to remove the buttons' shanks). Tips: maybe some fence posts need skulls on them, or you want a skeleton arm reaching out of a grave! Perhaps there are bats flying through the dead autumn trees in front of a crescent moon or you use wire to hang spiders from the roof of your cabin.
