Red Heart Super Saver Crochet & Knit Ladybug Hat

Kids will love wearing their hats when there's a cute ladybug on top!

Project Instructions

    To crochet, use a gauge of 13 sts and 14 rounds (4 inch) to create a hat that is approximately 14 (16, 18) inch in circumference. Save time, check your gauge. If the hooks listed under supplies do not work, use the size that allows you to obtain the required gauge. Pattern is written for smaller size (14 inch) with changes for larger sizes (16, 18 inch) in parentheses. Download template for abbreviations not explained elsewhere and the pattern. Special abbreviation: Decrease single crochet (sc2tog) = [Draw up a loop in next sc] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

    Hat: With larger hook and Black, ch 44 (52, 56); join with a slip st to first ch, making sure ch is not twisted. Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; join with a slip st to first sc – 44 (52, 56) sc. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc around; join. Round 3: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc around, changing to Hot Red in last sc; join. Rounds 4-5: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc around; join. Round 6: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc around, changing to Black in last sc; join. Rounds 7-8: Ch 1, sc in back loop of each sc around, join. Repeat Rounds 3-9 until hat measures 6 (7, 8) inch from beginning. Fasten off leaving a 12 inch tail. Sew a seam straight across the top of the hat. Fold the corners formed by the top seam into the center of the hat and tack in place. Weave in ends.

    Ladybug Body: With smaller hook and Hot Red, ch 4. Row 1 (Right Side): Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 6 sc. Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc; turn – 12 sc. Rows 3-7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, changing to Black in last sc; turn. Rows 9-10: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Row 11: Ch 1, [sc2tog] 6 times; turn – 6 sc. Row 12: Ch 1, draw up a loop in each of next 6 sc, yo and draw through all 7 loops on hook. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

    Ladybug Wings (make 2): With smaller hook and Hot Red, ch 4. Row 1 (Right Side): Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn – 6 sc. Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc across; turn – 12 sc. Rows 3-7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Row 4: Ch 1, [sc2tog] 6 times; turn – 6sc. Row 5: Ch 1, [sc2tog] 3 times; turn – 3 sc. Row 6: Ch 1, draw up a loop in each of next 3 sc, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

    Ladybug Legs (make 3): With smaller hook and Black, ch 24. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

    Finishing: Sew body seam, filling body with Polyfil. With yarn needle and Black, embroider a line of chain stitches down back of body and French knot spots on wings. Sew legs across bottom of body so that they evenly extend on each side. Sew wings to back of body. Glue Wiggle Eyes. Sew Ladybug to center top of hat. Weave in ends.

    Hat: With circular needle and Black, cast on 60 (68, 76) sts. Place marker; join, being careful not to twist sts. Working in Stripe pattern of 6 rounds Black, 6 rounds Hot Red, knit every round until 5 (5-1/2, 6) inch from beginning.

    Shape Crown: Note: Divide stitches evenly on double pointed needles when circumference of crown is too small for circular needle.

    Round 1: Maintaining Stripe pattern, [K4, K2tog] 10 (11, 12) times, K 0 (2, 4) – 50 (57, 64) sts. Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit. Round 3: [K3, K2tog] 10 (11, 12) times, K 0 (2, 4) – 40 (46, 52 sts. Round 5: [K2, K2tog] 10 (11, 12 times, K 0 (2, 4) – 30 (35, 40) sts. Round 7: [K1, K2tog] 10 (11, 12) times, K 0 (2, 4) – 20 (24, 28) sts. Round 9: *K2tog; repeat from * around -¬- 10 (12, 14) sts. Round 11: Repeat Round 9 – 5 (6, 7) sts. Cut yarn, leaving a 12 inch tail. Run tail through sts on needles, pull tight to close opening and knot securely.

    Ladybug Body: With Black cast on 4 sts. Work in St st, beginning with knit row, increase in each st across on next 2 rows – 16 sts. Work 8 rows even in St st; cut Black, join Hot Red. Work 4 rows even in St st. Work 2 sts together across next 2 rows – 4 sts. Cut Hot Red, leaving a 12 inch tail. Run tail through sts on needle, pull tight to close opening and knot together.

    Ladybug Wings (make 2): With Black, cast on 5 sts. Row 1: Increase in first st, [K1, increase in next st] twice – 8 sts. Purl 1 row. Increase in first 2 sts and last 2 sts of next row – 12 sts. Purl 1 row. Decrease 1 st at each end of next row – 9 sts. Next Row: [P2tog] twice, P1, [P2tog] twice – 5 sts. Decrease 1 st at each end of next row – 3 sts. Cut yarn, leaving a 12 inch tail. Run tail through sts on needle to gather wing and secure.

    Ladybug Legs (make 3): With Hot Red and crochet hook, ch 24. Fasten off.

    Assembly: Sew body seam, filling body with fiberfill. With Hot Red, embroider a line down back of body and French knot spots on wings. Sew legs across bottom of body so that they evenly extend on both sides. Sew wings to back of body. Glue eyes in place. Sew Ladybug to top of hat.
