Project Instructions

  • 1
    Download and print project template.
  • 2
Tape several strips of newspaper or wrapping paper together for a 54 inch square. Fold in half and then fold in half the opposite way for a 27 inch folded square. With a ruler or measuring tape, measure 20 inch from the double folded corner of the square and mark with a pen or marker.
  • 3
Repeat step 2 several times to make a 20 inch arc from the double folded corner. Connect the marks that are 24 inch from the corner and then cut on that line. (Figure A of of template.)
  • 4
Measure and mark 4-1/2 inch from the same double folded corner. Connect the dots and cut out the center circle out as well. (Figure B of the template.)
  • 5
Open the folded paper for a 40 inch circle with a 9 inch center hole.
  • 6
Cut the paper pattern in half. Now cut one half in half again for a quarter of the circle. Next, cut the quarter piece in half for an 1/8th of the skirt. This will become the pattern piece. Place the pattern on the green felt and cut out one wedge, but cut the felt piece 1/4 inch larger on the long straight sides for seam allowance.
  • 7
Cut out 3 more Kelly Green wedges by using the first one as the pattern since it is larger than the paper pattern.
  • 8
Cut out 4 pieces of the Solid Red or Decorated Red felt using the same felt pattern.
  • 9
Stitch the pieces with right sides together and alternating the colors with a 1/4 inch seam to complete the patchwork tree skirt. Do not stitch the final two felt wedges together. The skirt should have an opening for draping around the tree. (Figure C of the template.)
  • 10
Hand-stitch the pearls onto the outer edges of the branches of the flocked trees with White thread, one pearl on every other branch end.
  • 11
With a warm iron, press the seams open. (Use a polyester setting on the iron and test on a scrap. If the iron is too hot, it will distort the fibers and be obvious.)
  • 12
Cut a Solid Red circle of felt using the folded method like in step 2 and step 3, with the finished size to be 45 inch in diameter. The inside circle will also be 9 inch in diameter.
  • 13
Cut an opening slit in the Solid Red felt circle at the same place as the opening in the patchwork.
  • 14
Pin the Solid Red circle to the patchwork circle with right sides together securely around the center circle. Machine stitch with a straight stitch and red thread using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Flip the skirt so the right side of the patchwork skirt is face up with the larger Solid Red skirt underneath.
  • 15
Pin the patchwork skirt to the red skirt to keep it stable as you attach the trim. Pin the edge of the 1-1/2 inch White chainette between the top layer and bottom layer securely. Stitch around the entire skirt with Red thread and a zigzag stitch, securing the top and bottom skirt layers with the chainette between. Pull the securing stitches out of the bottom of the chainette to allow it to fringe. (Figure D of the template.)
  • 16
Trim the openings of the top and bottom skirt layers to match. Stitch with a zigzag Red stitch with a 1/4 inch seam allowance from the center hole to the bottom of the double layer of skirt.
