Watermelon Wood Stool

This melon themed painting project would be sweet enough décor for a little girl’s room or on a patio. Remember that if it’s going to be used or exposed to the elements, seal it with a matte sealer to protect your paint!

Project Instructions

  • 1
Place footstool on protective surface. Spray paint footstool with Primer Spray. Note: this is an optional step, but it creates a nice white surface that will allow the painted acrylic paint colors to really pop. Let dry.
  • 2
Lightly trace with pencil a 6-1/2 inch circle in the center of the stool. You want to have an approximately 1 inch border outside the circle to the edge of the footstool which will be for the white, then green rind of the watermelon.
  • 3
Paint bottom and legs of the footstool Irish Moss, 2-3 coats with Flat Shade brush. Let each coat dry completely.
  • 4
Paint ½ inch in from the edge of the top of the footstool and along the side Irish Moss, 2-3 coats. Make sure there is an approximate ½ inch circle of white remaining between the Irish Moss green and the drawn circle.
  • 5
With Margarita paint, use Stencil brush to paint alternating lines around the top edge of the foot stool, creating the look of striping on a watermelon. The stencil brush will create a scruffier line.
  • 6
Paint the inside of the circle on top of footstool with Dragonfruit, 2-3 coats.
  • 7
Once completely dry, take two lines of 1/8 inch stencil tape and create a + across the top of the stool, creating 4 quadrants. Start by painting a seed (teardrop shape) in each quadrant near where the tape intersects with Black paint and Mini Filbert brush.
  • 8
Continue working outward, moving the stool around in a circular motion, moving outward, evenly spacing the seeds out. Let dry.
  • 9
Remove tape. Fill in with additional seeds where there may be too much space. Reference image for guidance. Fill in seeds with another coat of Black paint as needed.
  • 10
Option: paint or spray a sealer layer over footstool to protect from use.
