"Where Have You Been?"
Been on the road to Rhode Island? Maybe you've taken the boys to Boise? Show everyone which of the states you've seen! (It doesn't matter if you've seen them by train, plane, car, boat or cruise ship.) Mark your travels with a map with muslin, floss and an embroidery hoop! Yep, we said embroidery hoop -- this old sewing notion has become one of the trendiest ways to create wall art.
- Time:1 hour (+ drying time)
1Download and print project template before starting.
2Prepare Hoop: Cut a 16 inch x 16 inch piece of muslin. Take apart embroidery hoop. Place muslin over the inner hoop (the piece without the screw) and place the outer hoop over the muslin. Tighten the screw so the hoop is back together. Pull the excess muslin from all sides of the hoop to smooth muslin surface. Apply tacky glue to the back side, inner edge of the hoop and fold muslin down. Once glue has dried, trim excess muslin.
3Draw and Fill In Map: Place template onto the back of embroidery hoop and tape it down so it stays in place. Tip: Hold embroidery hoop against window for transparency, making it easier to see the lines. Use pencil to trace map, then go over your tracing with Black fabric marker. Draw a heart where you live and fill in the heart with embroidery floss. Tip: This is easiest if you start stitching from the bottom of heart, then stitch side to side, then work your way up to the top of heart.
4Finishing: Use marker to put a dot at the places you've been. Use a ruler and marker to draw a line from the heart to these dots. Stitch dashes on the lines and then an X at your destination with the embroidery floss. Write the year of your trip and stitch over that with embroidery floss too. Write the name of your project on the muslin with pencil (we called ours My Summer Travels) and stitch over your text with embroidery floss. Continue to add stitches as you travel to other places.
