Project Instructions

  • 1
A day ahead of serving cookies, prepare and roll out dough following recipe directions. Use cutters to cut letter and number cookies. Bake and cool cookies.
  • 2
Also a day ahead of serving cookies, prepare color flow icing following recipe directions on the back of the color flow icing container (depending on how many cookies you are making, you may want to double the recipe). Divide icing into five portions. Tint one portion each Black, Brown (combine Brown with a little Red-Red for Brown shown) and Bright Yellow (combine Lemon Yellow with Golden Yellow for Bright Yellow shown); reserve a portion White. Reserve a small amount of each full-strength icing for outlining and decorating, then thin remainder of these colors. Divide small amounts of the fifth portion Orange/Yellow (combine Buttercup Yellow, Orange and Ivory for Orange/Yellow shown), Pink, Gray, Kelly Green, Orange, Red-Red and Royal Blue.
  • 3
Use tip 3, cut disposable decorating bags and full-strength icing to outline cookies as follows: use Black for “A” and “2”, White for “B” and “3”, Bright Yellow for “1” and Brown for “C”. Let “A” cookie set 1 to 2 hours. For all other cookies, use thinned icing in same color as outline and a cut disposable decorating bag to fill in cookies. For “2” cookie, immediately fill in with Brown icing. Let dry 8 hours.
  • 4
After outline has set on the "A" cookie, use thinned Pink, Gray, Orange/Yellow and Ivory icings and cut disposable decorating bags to fill in cookie. After filling in Ivory pencil point, immediately fill in Black lead. Let dry 8 hours.
  • 5
Use Black edible color marker to draw circles, lines, ruler markings and letters on the "B", "1" and "3" cookies. Use Red edible color marker to draw grade.
  • 6
Use tip 2, cut disposable decorating bags and Red, Kelly Green, Orange, Royal Blue and Bright Yellow icings to pipe paint splotches on "C" cookie. Let dry 2 to 3 hours.
  • 7
Use tip 2, cut disposable decorating bags and full-strength White and Red-Red icings to pipe equation, chalk and eraser. Let dry 2 to 3 hours.
