Wilton Cute Crawlies Spider Cake

This is no trick; those fondant spiders are actually a cute treat. Easily make colorful creepy-crawlies to decorate your Halloween cake.

Project Instructions

    Make layered cake. Prepare batter following recipe directions. Bake and cool two 6”" cake layers. Level, torte, fill and stack layers on cake circle for a 2-layer cake, 5”" high. (Note: project time does not include this baking and cooling time.)

    Ice cake. Reserve a large portion of White icing. Tint portion of remaining decorator icing Black. Use spatula and White icing to ice cake smooth.

    Make spiders. Tint 1 oz. fondant each Light and Dark Orange, Light and Dark Green, and Light and Dark Violet. (Combine Violet with Rose for Violet shown.) Use fondant roller with Pink guide rings to roll out fondant, separately, 1/16"” thick. Use straight side of round cut-out “D” to cut spider bodies and straight side of round cut-out “F” to cut spider heads from dark tinted fondant. Use wide end of tip 2A to cut dots from light tinted fondant. Also, use knife to cut diamonds, each ½" x 3/8", and triangles, each 1/8", from light tinted fondant. Use brush and piping gel to attach dots, diamonds, triangles and heads to spider bodies. Use brush and piping gel to attach spiders to cake. Use tip 2, a cut disposable decorating bag and White icing to pipe dot eyeballs. Use tip 2, a cut disposable decorating bag and Black icing to pipe dot pupils.

    Decorate cake. Use tip 2, a cut disposable decorating bag and Black icing to pipe spider legs and string. Use tip 4, a cut disposable decorating bag and White icing to pipe bead bottom border.
