Wilton Ombré Valentine 5 Layer Cake

1Project time does not include the time needed to bake and cool cake.
2Prepare batter following recipe directions. Divide batter into five equal portions. Bake and cool cake layers in pan set according to pan package directions. Level as needed.
3Tint about 1-1/2 cups icing very light Rose and 1 cup icing each in four shades of Rose from next lightest to darkest. (Tip: gradually add more color to icing for darker shades, mixing between additions to check color.) Reserve about 1 cup White icing to decorate cake. Place one layer cut side up on cake plate. Use spatula and darkest Rose icing to ice top smooth. Repeat to stack and ice layers with gradually lighter rose icing, finishing with lightest Rose on cake top. Reserve remaining icing.
4Use tip 2A, cut disposable decorating bag (from the cupcake decorating set) and darkest Rose icing to pipe two lines around bottom of cake. Repeat with two lines of each icing shade, from next darkest Rose to lightest Rose, to top edge of cake. Use spatula to ice cake top smooth with lightest Rose icing and to smooth icing on sides, blending colors together.
5Use tip 2A, cut disposable decorating bag (from the cupcake decorating set) and reserved White icing to pipe five swirls on cake top. Sprinkle cake top with Red sugar.
